Summer Knitting

Someone remarked yesterday that it must be way too hot to knit in the summertime. I replied that I don't knit heavy sweaters then, but there are lots of other things a person can knit that won't heat them up too much....

For example, itty bitty baby socks,

Fun felted fishies (the front two aren't finished yet),

Soft Alpaca wristlets,

Fuzzy baby hoodies (this looks much nicer in person. I don't know why everything knit from this yarn looks weird when photographed, but it does. The hoody is very light and soft as cashmere),

And a teddy bear sweater, knit from cotton yarn.

I told them that knitting wasn't all there was to do. I've been trying my hand at applique quilting and made this the other day. It's 14 x 14 inches. Now if I can just figure out how to get the excess stickum from the fusable web off the front. See that little smudge just under the dragonfly's wing? Gonna have to look it up somewhere.

I'm trying out a pattern loosely based on the Randomly Slanted Sweater pattern from the spring 2000 issue of Knitter's Magazine, using the Iris yarn from yesterday. It's created from bias strips and then sewn together. Here's the beginning.

So...no, it isn't too hot to knit in the summertime but you do need to keep your iced tea from dripping on your knitting! :)

About 3/4 of the back of the sweater is knit. Here is a picture of it with the yarn.

Birthday Sweater in the Making

I finally got the yarn for the sweater I'm knitting for Diana for her Christmas, then discovered it wouldn't work after all. Since it is too late to order yarn in time to get the sweater knit before Christmas, I went looking again in the city. The only wool yarn I could find that was the right thickness and in colors I knew she liked was at Joann's and came in a purse kit. Since I had 40% off coupons, I took Tim and his friend Brandon to town, gave them each a coupon and money, and we bought four purse kits.

I've already gotten a few inches done on the sweater and love it. I just hope Di does too. :) More pics tomorrow!

Have your cake and....

Today something reminded me of a certain cake that my mom used to bake. I can't even remember what it was that triggered the memory, but suddenly I was ravenous for a piece of that cake.
So I took out this,
mixed it up until it looked like this ,
then added a little of this and this,
and put it in the oven.

In the meantime, since Tim was in school, Riley got to help me out and be the bowl licker. He did his job so well, I almost didn't have to wash the bowl when he was done. ;)

When the cake came out of the oven, it looked like this,
and tasted like this.
Mission accomplished!
